Corsica: an island of character and unique terroirs

Corsica, nicknamed the Island of Beauty, is a unique wine region, where the Mediterranean influence combines with mountainous terroirs, offering wines with very distinct characters. This geological diversity, associated with rare indigenous grape varieties, gives Corsican wines a strong and unique identity. With around 8,000 hectares of vineyards, spread between the main appellations such as Patrimonio, Ajaccio, or even Vin de Corse (regional AOC), Corsica is full of treasures for lovers in search of discovery.
One of the most famous estates on the island is Clos Canarelli, located in the Figari region, in the south of the island. Yves Canarelli, pioneer of biodynamics in Corsica, works with indigenous grape varieties such as Sciaccarellu and Vermentino. His Clos Canarelli Blanc is a wine of remarkable purity, with aromas of citrus fruits and white flowers, offering superb minerality, a reflection of its granite terroir. Its reds, like the Clos Canarelli Rouge, are also impressive, with fine tannins and spicy notes.
In the Patrimonio appellation, Domaine Antoine Arena is a true institution. Antoine Arena is a fierce defender of local grape varieties and produces wines of rare authenticity. Its Patrimonio Blanc Carco, made from Vermentino, is a structured white, with beautiful acidity and aromas of exotic fruits and almond. Patrimonio Rouge Grotte di Sole, made from Niellucciu (Corsican grape variety par excellence), is a powerful and elegant wine, with aromas of red fruits and Corsican maquis.
another estate that deserves the attention of enlightened amateurs is Domaine Comte Abbatucci, located in AOC Ajaccio. Jean-Charles Abbatucci, a fervent supporter of biodynamics, produces exceptional wines from ancestral and forgotten grape varieties. His Faustine Blanc, a Vermentino-based wine, is a model of balance and freshness, with aromas of white-fleshed fruits and a touch of salinity, evoking maritime influences. For the reds, its Cuvée Diplomate d'Empire is a tribute to the richness of the Corsican terroirs, a wine of great complexity, with notes of black fruits, Mediterranean herbs and a perfectly controlled tannic structure.
